Installation Problems

If you are having problems getting started the first time, we ask that you check a couple of items.

For Step 1. - Getting a trial account

You can see if your trial account was setup properly by going to www.bidwhistonline.com  into Your Account

You will see this link at the top of the page.  Click and then login.  Your account information should appear.

For Step 2.  - Installing Java

To check to see if this step went properly, please check to see if you have Java Web Start.

Goto Start -> Programs and check for Java Web Start in your listing.  If you do not see Java Web Start,

Bid Whist Online will not start properly.

If you do see Java Web Start, try to start it. If you see flashes of a program but nothing opens, then you may have a java conflict.

I get an error message that says:

No Install package

Please try installing the complete package. It is much larger and this one time download may take several minutes.

For Step 3. - Starting the game

If you have confirmed that the first two steps went properly then you should get a login screen when you click on

Start Playing on the home page.  If you do not see this, then you not may not have finished step 2 succesfully.

If you get a message that says to download bidwhist.jnlp, then you are missing the association necessary between .jnlp files and JavaWebStart. To correct this you will need to manually create the association. While this can happen to anyone it is more common with Windows 2000 machines. Directions can vary slightly depending on your operating system.

  1. Open up Windows Explorer (Start->Programs->Windows Explorer)
  2. From the menu bar at the top select Tools -> Folder Options.
  3. Click on the File Types tab.
  4. Select JNLP (the list should be alphabetical order
  5. Press Change.
  6. Select javaws as the program to open JNLP files and click OK
  7. Close down all of windows and try to start the game again. (You may want to restart your computer)

I get an error message that says:

If this is the problem, then you should check different items for connectivity.

            1.  Check to make sure that there's not a problem with the game.  Whenever possible if the site is expected to be down for longer than half an hour we will post a message on the homepage for www.bidwhistonline.com. If you can not reach www.bidwhistonline.com, then it is likely that the game is also down.

            2.  Check to make sure that you have a connection to the web.  If you can read this page, then you are connected to the web.

            3.  Make sure that your firewall allows port 1234 to access the web.  This is very important.

            4.  Some users have reported problems starting the game when Yahoo Parental controls are on.  The Parental controls conflict with Java and thus the game does not start properly.  If you can not get the Java Web Start program to start then it is likely this conflict is the problem.  You can goto Start -> Programs to Java Web Start.  A program should open and stay open.  If it just flashes a couple of times then you have this conflict.  You can try a few things.  a.  Be sure to do the install of Java with the controls off.  Make sure you have the latest version of Parental controls running (this may or may not help). b) When you want to play the game turn off the controls and then restart them after you are done.

Playing Problems

When I work with the kitty the machine game crashes

People have two issues that occur with the kitty.

One is that if you take too long the computer assumes that you have left and it will play the hand for you.

If the game crashes on you. then there is an imcompatibility between your computer system and the version of Java you have installed

You have several choices to address the problem.

                 1.  Update your video drivers especially if they are ATI drivers.  If you are running Windows 95/98 or ME, you may need to do this.  This problem is less common with new computers. A some users of XP have seen this problem.especially if they have ATI video drivers.  Many of the incompatibilities occur because the video drivers are not update and differ from the current standards.  Updating your drivers can be tricking for a person new to the web.  Below is a description of how to at least get the information about your current driver.

                a.  Go to the Control Panel.  Usually, you can find this by pressing Start.  Then press settings.  Then press control Panel.  Your actual steps may be different.

                b.  On the Control panel window, you will see a link that reads "Display".  Click that.

                c.  On the Display Properties window, you will see a tab that reads "Settings".  Click that.

                 d.  Near the bottom right you will see a button labeled "Advanced...".  Click that.

                e.  Now you will see a tab labeled "Adapter".  Click that.  This pages give all of the information about your driver.  You may need to search the web for information about your particular driver and if an update is available.

                 f.  Near the upper right you will see a button labeled "Change...".  Click that.

If you driver is an ATI driver then going directly to their support page will help correct the problem. Please follow their instructions to download and install the latest video drivers for your system.

The last possibility is that your computer would prefer a different version of Java especially if you are using an older system link Windows 98. If you have tried all the steps outlined on the installation page and the game still does not work, please try these steps. We are no longer able to accommodate all of the oldest systems. Unfortunately the newest versions of the package for Java are incompatible with Windows 98. You can extend the life of the game by using at least a newer version of Java.

Basically, we want you to uninstall the old Java files on your computer and start the installation procedure again.

  1. Go to the Control Panel.  Usually, you can find this by pressing Start.  Then press settings.  Then press control Panel.  Your actual steps may be different.
  2. On the Control panel window, you will see a link that reads "Add/Remove Programs".  Click that.
  3. Scroll down on the currently installed programs list until you find files that start with Java 2 Runtime Environment or Java Web Start.
  4. Uninstall these programs (the Java 2 Runtime Environment files and Java Web Start) by clicking their name and hitting uninstall or remove.  *** MAKE SURE YOU ONLY UNINSTALL THE JAVA FILES!!! ****
  5. Once you have uninstalled the programs, reboot your computer.
  6. After rebooting, start the installation process with this older version of Java - 1.4.2
If none of these procedures does not help, please send us email feedback@bidwhist.com

We will need to know the nature of your problem.  So let us know if it is in Step 1, 2 or 3 from the top of this page that you first see problems.
